This year's Dogwood Weekend at King College welcomed over 325 attendees including alumni, their families, and guests. During the annual alumni celebration, several individuals were recognized for exceptional achievement in their career field, remarkable service to King, and commitment to serving as leaders in their communities.
The Distinguished Alumni of the Year award was presented to Dr. Charles "Vic" Briscoe. Briscoe graduated from King in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science in physics. He taught physics and math at King until 1954. In 1953, Briscoe married Betsy Harrington, class of 1954.
Vic continued his education at The Rice Institute in Houston, Texas, where he earned both his master's and doctorate degrees in physics.
In 1958, Vic joined the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During his 37 year career at UNC, he served as an instructor for undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. The last 13 years of his tenure, Briscoe served as assistant to the Chair of the physics department. He also served as a visiting professor at the Universitay Karlsruhe, West Germany, and at Queens University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
In 2004, the King College Alumni Office introduced an award to recognize the young alumna/alumnus who have made outstanding professional contributions to their field since graduating, and who have shown a strong commitment to the service of others. The Young Alumni Achievement Award was presented to Jasen Eige, class of 1994.
After attending King College, Jasen earned his master's degree in public policy and his Juris Doctorate degree at Regent University. Eige first worked for Virginia's Governor Bob McDonnell as an intern in his legislative office during law school twelve years ago.
After law school, Eige clerked for the Honorable Glen M. Williams, senior United States district judge for the Western District of Virginia. He then joined the Abingdon law firm of Penn, Stuart & Eskridge as an associate. In 2003, Eige moved to Richmond where he went to work in attorney general Jerry Kilgore's administration as an assistant attorney general. In 2006, he was promoted to senior assistant attorney general and later served as acting section chief for the government services portion of the section. In this capacity, Eige directly managed attorneys and support staff for the Finance Law and Government Services Section and represented several state agencies including the Board of Elections, Department of Agriculture, the Virginia Port Authority, the College Savings Fund, the Retirement System, the Department of Economic Development, and the Small Business Financing Authority. In 2007, Eige began serving as chief of staff and counsel to then Attorney General Robert F. McDonnell and in 2009, he joined Governor McDonnell's gubernatorial campaign as Chief Counsel. In 2010, Governor McDonnell appointed Eige as counselor and senior advisor to the Governor.
The recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award was Carol Smith Green, class of 1979. During her 32-year career with King College, Carol has worked in development, at the switchboard, in student services, financial aid, enrollment management and now registration and records. Carol currently serves as student support specialist to students in the Graduate & Professional Studies programs.
Green's volunteer efforts include packing exam care packages, hosting the 50-plus breakfast, and serving as class agent and the staff campaign co-chair in 2008.
Green describes her career by saying, "My life has been greatly enriched by being here. I have literally spent my whole adult life at King College. I am proud to serve the students. I am proud to work alongside people of integrity and faith."
The Graduate and Professional Studies Award was presented to an alumna/alumnus who exemplifies the College's goals of excellence, achievement, and stewardship. This year, the GPS Award was presented to Patrick Kane, an Emmy-nominated producer with nearly 25 years' experience in advertising, marketing, and communications. Kane is senior vice president of marketing communications for Wellmont Health System. Before joining Wellmont in 2005, Kane previously served as director of marketing communications for Conemaugh Health System, and vice president and treasurer of Kane and Company Advertising Inc., in Johnstown, Pa. Kane is a graduate of Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Ind., where he received a bachelor's degree in communications and theater arts, and of King College in Bristol, Tenn., where he earned his Master of Business Administration.
In 2009, King College conveyed a new award, the Legacy Award. King is blessed to have numerous families who have made attending King "a family affair." The award recognizes their commitment to King as well as their lifetime of service and achievement. This year the Legacy Award recognized the McClintock family. John W. McClintock, Jr. of Richlands, Va., had a plan to ensure his three sons received an exceptional education. He chose King College as the foundation for his son's outstanding careers. His vision came to be with the graduation of John McClintock lll in 1974, Michael McClintock in 1976, and Patrick McClintock in 1987.
John lll earned his Juris Doctorate at Washington and Lee Law, joined his father's law firm in Tazewell, VA, and spent the last 18 years of his career as juvenile and domestic relations judge of the 29th District of Virginia. Now retired, John III serves as youth pastor of Tazewell Christian Church. Michael graduated the Medical College of Virginia and continues to practice Ophthalmology in Corbin, Ky. Patrick received his law degree at the University of Tennessee Law, joined his father's law firm and has been an assistant commonwealth's attorney for Tazewell County for the last 10 years.
John lll, Mike, and Pat give honor to their father for his wisdom and vision in providing guidance and support of their time at King College.
